Samba Survey March '96 - Revision 3 | Samba Web Pages
Submission Options: View | Add | Modify | Delete | Help

Current Survey Stats are available and a Samba Wish List has been compiled (5th May '97)

For information on bugs with the Survey and Browsers etc, please see the Help page.

As of Revision 2 of the survey (24 April '96), the question "Are you happy with this migration?" changed to "Are you happy with this installation?". If you made an entry prior to this revision, please check that your entry still reflects your opinion.

If you don't see the question "Are you happy with this installation?" when filling out the survey please let me know.

Who uses Samba?

There are certainly very many thousands of Samba users, although it is impossible to tell how many since there is no central sales or distribution organisation.

Why Do Sites Use Samba?

Market share only indicates part of the story, and it is important to be able to quantify some of the reasons that sites move to Samba. Individual sites have made many posts to the samba list but there is no comprehensive summary over many sites. Some sites are extremely large, others are notably complex, and many are small and very glad not to spend the money on commercial software.

The Survey

This survey is designed to help users and potential users identify sites which may have similarities to their own, provide some kind of a measure of Samba's market penetration and indicate the main reasons people find Samba useful. For longer explanations, sites are urged to develop their own web pages which the survey response can point to, to show how Samba fits in. This could well lead to useful collaboration.

The Survey Forms

There are 4 forms to the Samba Survey:
To access each of these forms, click of the approriate word in the Submission Options graphic or text menus as above and at the top of other Samba Survey forms.

Useful Things
There is a question of the survey that asks, 'Maximum number of simultaneous clients'. If you have no idea what that is for your site/servers take a look at 'smbstat' . It is a little script I wrote to log smbd usage. Run it with the logging option every 5 minutes (using cron) and you have a good idea of usage over time. This script can also be found (I think) in the latest beta sources.
